Shay Sane’s life mission is to help women heal through sisterhood and travel experiences. After losing her sister and dealing with compounded personal stress, Sane decided to travel with girlfriends to relieve the pressure and renew her spirit. After experiencing the transformative healing power of sisterhood and travel, Sane founded Black Girls on The Go, a special traveling movement designed to foster sisterhood and personal transformation through emotional healing.

Describe yourself in three words.

Resilient, sisterly, and a servant-leader.

Why did you start Black Girls On The Go?

I started Black Girls On The Go as a way to help women heal through travel and sisterhood. Having experienced first-hand the transformative healing power of travel.  Black Girls On The Go’s undiluted mission is to provide a sacred space to help women heal from stress, depression, emotional trauma and improve self-confidence.

My story is a personal testament of how any woman can turn pain into purpose. I’ve overcome abandonment, emotional trauma, and depression. I’ve tried various forms of therapy including talk therapy, acupuncture, and exercise. However, when combined [therapy] with travel my healing journey began. I’ve spent the last 20 years traveling around the world, exploring other countries and significantly healing myself and other women during the process.

If you gave a speech to young women, what would you title your speech and why?

I would title my speech after the famous Oprah Winfrey quote: “Think like a queen. A queen is not afraid to fail. Failure is another steppingstone to greatness.” As the current Ms. Mid-Atlantic of the Mr. & Mrs. Black America Pageant, I use my crown and platform to pursue their greatness. I chose Oprah’s quote as the title because it’s a reminder that you don’t need a crown or title to live a life of greatness.

What sets your business apart from others in the market?

The fundamental difference between Black Girls On The Go and other travel companies is my dedicated approach to creating a transformative travel experience that offers sisterhood, self-improvement, personal transformation, and most importantly emotional healing. There are tons of travel groups for women, 90 percent of them focus on travel as an outlet solely for fun, designed with fun activities, which is great for women seeking excitement. For women who are seeking to overcome depression, dealing with a break-up, grief and trauma; Black Girls On The Go is the perfect opportunity to begin the journey of healing.

What does it take to run a successful business?

One of the most important things I’ve learned when it comes to running a successful business is having an extended long-term plan. The keyword is extended. For some, a long-term plan is three years or five years, whereas an extended long-term plan is at least 10 years. … Having a vision of where you want the business to be in 10 years puts you in the mindset of longevity, which allows you to make decisions for the long run.
